Electrical component failure leads to brief flame discharge from liquid hydrogen carrier’s gas combustion unit vent stack
2/3/2023
Key points: Flame was briefly observed propagating from the vent stack of a gas combustion unit on board a liquified hydrogen tanker; Excessive temperatures in unit resulted after an incorrectly-fitted electrical solenoid valve failed, closing the air supply damper to which it was attached; Unit’s control system was not equipped to detect a damper closing during operation, and automated safety controls meant to detect the abnormality were not effective. The failure of an incorrectly-fitted electrical solenoid valve led to the brief propagation of flame from a liquified hydrogen carrier gas combustion unit’s vent stack, an Australian Transport Safety Bureau investigation has found.
